CELPIP Books and Study Materials: What Is Worth Your Time

An honest guide to CELPIP books and study materials: the free official tools, the paid ones and their prices, how to judge other books, and a minimum kit.

Quick answer
  • Start with the free official materials: two complete practice tests, a sample test, webinars, a podcast and a test taker guidebook.
  • Buy books only to fill a gap. Official ebooks and courses cost 20 to 40 dollars each on celpip.ca as of October 2026.
  • Judge any other book by its date, a format that matches today's test, real answer explanations and realistic timing.

For most people, the best CELPIP books and study materials are the free official ones. Add one or two paid items only to fix a clear weakness. You do not need a shelf of books. You need realistic practice tests, honest feedback on writing and speaking, and a plan.

This guide lists what CELPIP itself offers today, free and paid. Then it shows how to judge any other book, and ends with a short minimum kit.

Free official materials

CELPIP gives away a lot of free material. As of October 2026, these are free on celpip.ca:

  • Two complete practice tests: you fill in a short form on the Free Practice Tests page to get them. The starter set includes answer keys for Listening and Reading, and Listening transcripts.
  • Performance Standards: these come with the free practice tests. They show what CELPIP raters look for when they score Writing and Speaking.
  • Free online sample test: it shows the format, the timing and the question types, with correct answers for Listening and Reading.
  • Webinars: live sessions on Zoom, plus recordings on CELPIP's YouTube channel. There are Writing Pro and Speaking Pro sessions at two targets, Target 5 and Target 9+, plus Reading Pro and Listening Pro.
  • Guidebook for Test Takers: a free PDF on the format and scoring. The current edition is dated July 2026.
  • The Official CELPIP Podcast: short episodes with tips for each skill, on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
  • Tips and Resources page: a page of plain advice for each of the four skills.

CELPIP's own pages give different totals for the webinars. The prep overview page says over 10 hours. The July 2026 Path to Success guide says over 18 hours. Either way, it is a lot of free teaching.

One thing to know about the free tests

The free practice tests let you go back and change answers. They also let you replay audio with a playbar. On test day you cannot do either. Each recording plays once, and you cannot return to a finished section.

So set your own rules. Play each recording once, and never go back. Your practice score will then be closer to a real one.

If you want more after the free tests, celpip.ca sells its own materials. These are the prices listed on its CELPIP-General study materials page as of October 2026, in Canadian dollars:

  • Online practice tests: each set has two tests. A single set (Set 13) costs $35. Sets 1 to 6 (12 tests) cost $155. Sets 7 to 13 (14 tests) cost $180. All 13 sets (26 tests) cost $295.
  • CELPIP-General Practice and Analysis (online): $25.
  • Ebooks: Common CELPIP Errors is $20. The two Study Guides (Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking) are $25 each, or $40 as a bundle.
  • More ebooks at $25 each: CELPIP Focus: Reading and Writing, CELPIP Focus: Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary Skills, and Reading Your Way into English.
  • Online courses: CELPIP Accelerate, Reading and Writing, and CELPIP Accelerate, Listening and Speaking. Each is $25, or $40 as a bundle.
  • Classroom courses: the CELPIP Preparation Program runs at test centres and other schools. Each school sets its own price and handles enrolment.

Prices change, and tax may apply at checkout. Check the store before you pay.

Which paid item to buy first

Do not buy everything. Take the two free practice tests first, then look at your weakest skill.

  • Low Listening or Reading: more official practice tests are the most direct help. They use real CELPIP question types.
  • Low Writing or Speaking: a study guide or course for that pair of skills can help. Remember that a book cannot score your answers.
  • Many small grammar slips: a book of common errors is cheap and targeted.

How to judge other books

Many other CELPIP books are sold online and in shops. Some are useful, and some are out of date. You do not need a name list to choose well. Check these four things before you buy:

  • Published date: look for a recent edition. An old book may describe a test that has since changed.
  • Matches the current format: the book should cover Listening in 6 parts, Reading in 4 parts, Writing in 2 tasks and Speaking in 8 tasks. Check the part names against the official CELPIP test format page.
  • Answer explanations: an answer key alone teaches little. A good book explains why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.
  • Realistic timing: practice should use the real time limits. Writing takes 53 minutes for both tasks, and Speaking takes about 15 minutes in total.

Also check the sample answers. Writing samples should be 150 to 200 words, like the real tasks. If every sample is 300 words, the book is not training you for the real test.

Be careful with any book that promises a score or a CLB level. CLB means Canadian Language Benchmarks, the scale IRCC uses. No book can promise a level, because a level depends on your own answers on test day.

Try your public library

Many public libraries in Canada carry CELPIP prep books. Search your library's online catalogue for "CELPIP". Some popular titles have a waiting list, so place a hold early. A library copy also lets you check a book before you decide to buy it.

Where CelpMock fits

CelpMock is an independent practice site. It is not part of CELPIP. It does two jobs that a book cannot do.

First, it times you on screen, like the real test. Second, it gives AI feedback on your writing and speaking. A book can show model answers, but it cannot tell you what is wrong with yours.

  • Free sample test: a free account gives you one part of each section on the real timers. It takes about 50 minutes and gives you a level for each skill. Start at the free sample test.
  • With a pass: full mock tests, practice by part for all four skills, and AI-graded writing and speaking. Passes last 7, 30 or 90 days. See pricing.

AI feedback is a practice tool, not an official score. Use it to find weak spots between official practice tests.

Your minimum study kit

For a typical candidate aiming at CLB 7 to 9, this kit is enough to start:

  1. The free Guidebook for Test Takers. Read it once to learn the format and scoring.
  2. The two free official practice tests. Take one at the start to find your level. Save the second for the last two weeks.
  3. One webinar for your weakest skill. Pick the Target 5 or Target 9+ version that matches your goal.
  4. A way to get feedback on writing and speaking. That can be a teacher, a study partner who scores honestly, or a practice tool with feedback.
  5. More timed practice. Use official practice test sets, mock tests, or both, under real conditions.
  6. One paid book, only if needed. Choose it for your weakest skill, not because it is popular.
  7. The score chart. Use the CELPIP score chart to turn results into CLB levels.

Then make a weekly plan around your test date. Our guide on how to prepare for CELPIP shows one way to do it.

For each skill, these pages go deeper: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Writing and Speaking pages include templates and sample answers.
