CELPIP Writing Task 1 and Task 2 samples
The CELPIP Writing test has two tasks: an email, then a survey response. Here is one of each with a sample answer.
You belong to a neighbourhood gardening club and have booked Room B at the city recreation office for Saturday, November 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Room B holds 15 people, but 25 members now plan to come to the seed swap, and your co-organizer Jamal can only help on Sunday, November 16. Write an email of about 150 to 200 words to Rachel, the booking clerk at the recreation office.
- Explain why you need to change your booking.
- Ask whether a larger room is free on one of the two days.
- Offer to help with the change, and say when you need an answer.
Subject: Change of booking for Room B
Dear Rachel,
I am writing about my booking of Room B for Saturday, November 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. I am from the neighbourhood gardening club and we are planning a seed swap.
I need to change the booking because more people want to come now. Room B hold only 15 people but 25 members will come. It is too small for us. Also, my co-organizer Jamal can not help on Saturday. He can only come on Sunday, November 16, so it would be better for us if we have the event on that day.
Could you tell me if there is a bigger room free on one of this two days? We need the room for two hours, in the morning if it is possible. If is not possible, the afternoon is also okay for us.
I can help you with the change. For example I can fill any form or come to the office to talk with you. Please let me know the answer by Friday, October 17, because we must tell the members about the place.
Thank you for your help.
Best regards, Maria Lopez
A neighbourhood grocery store is changing how it plans work shifts for its cashiers, shelf stockers and bakery helpers. The manager, Ines, and the team leader, Omar, must decide between two systems, and a regular customer, Jamal, has said that shift patterns can affect how well the store runs. The store would like your view as part of this survey. Choose one of the two options shown below and explain your choice. Give reasons and examples, and mention briefly one point in favour of the other option.
I think fixed weekly shifts is the better choice for our store. The main reason is that everybody knows when they work, so they can plan their life. For example, a cashier who study at night can keep the same days every week and not worry about changes. This makes workers happier and they will probably stay longer in the job.
Also, fixed shifts are good for the store running. If the same people work together every week, they learn what to do and the team works better. Bakery helpers need to start early to prepare the bread, and with a fixed schedule they are always ready at the same time. Jamal said shift patterns can affect how the store runs, and I agree, because customers like to see the same faces and get fast service.
However, flexible shifts have one good point. Workers can ask for days off when they have a family event or an exam, so they feel more free. But I think the manager would spend too much time making new schedules every two weeks, and mistakes could happen. For this reason I choose fixed shifts.

How CELPIP Writing is scored
There is no score chart for Writing, because nothing is counted right or wrong. Each task is marked on four criteria, and your Writing level comes from those.
On the right is the sample email from Task 1 above, marked the way your own writing is marked here: a level for each criterion, and the sentence that earned it.
On the real test, trained raters do the marking. On CelpMock it is done by AI against the same four criteria, so read your level as a close estimate.
A CELPIP Writing template for each task
A template gives you the order, not the sentences. Memorised sentences read as memorised, and they rarely fit the task in front of you.
Task 1 template: the email
Five short paragraphs, about 170 words.Task 2 template: the survey response

CELPIP Writing test: common questions
What are the two CELPIP Writing tasks?
Task 1 is an email: you are given a situation and three points to cover. Task 2 is a survey response: you choose one of two options and explain your choice.
How long is the CELPIP Writing test?
53 minutes: 27 for the email and 26 for the survey response. Each task has its own timer.
How many words should I write?
Between 150 and 200 for each task. The word count is part of the task fulfillment criterion, so writing far less or far more costs you.
Is there a CELPIP Writing score chart?
Not in the way there is for Reading and Listening. Nothing is counted right or wrong, so there is no table of right answers. Each task is marked on four criteria, and your Writing level comes from those.
Is CELPIP Writing practice free here?
Task 1 is free: it is part of the free sample test, and your email comes back with a level and comments. Task 2 and more Task 1 practice open with a pass.
What Writing level do I need?
Express Entry as a Federal Skilled Worker needs level 7 in every skill, and level 9 in every skill adds points. Citizenship does not ask for a Writing score.
