What to do the day before the exam

A calm checklist for the last day: what to prepare, what to review lightly and what to leave alone.

The day before an exam is for settling, not for cramming. New material learned in a rush rarely sticks, while a calm mind and a prepared bag reliably help.

Sort out the practical details

Confirm the time and the address of the test centre, and plan how you will get there. Work out how long the journey takes and add a generous margin. If you need identification, put it somewhere you cannot miss it.

Prepare your things

Lay out everything you need the night before:

  • Your identification and any confirmation you were sent
  • Clothes that are comfortable and easy to adjust to the room temperature
  • A snack and a bottle of water if they are allowed

Review lightly

Spend an hour at most looking over your own notes and the mistakes you have made before. Choose a few key points rather than trying to cover everything. Stop at a sensible time and do not start anything new.

Look after yourself

Eat a normal meal, go for a short walk and avoid anything that leaves you wired. Switch off screens early and aim for your usual bedtime. Sleep matters more than one more hour of revision.

Keep perspective

Some nerves are normal and even useful. Remind yourself that you have prepared steadily, and that the next day is simply a chance to show it.

Reading about the test helps. Sitting one helps more.
